Arkansas hospitals continue to be a major economic engine across the state, generating an estimated $19.73 billion in annual economic output while serving as essential healthcare providers for communities large and small.

According to the Arkansas Hospital Association’s 2026 Economic Impact Report, hospitals directly employ 48,630 Arkansans with an annual payroll exceeding $4.76 billion. That payroll supports nearly 48,000 additional jobs through spending across local economies, creating an estimated $8.66 billion in additional economic activity.
The report also highlights $5.58 billion in annual spending on supplies and utilities along with more than $500.9 million invested in hospital facilities and infrastructure.
During 2024, Arkansas hospitals cared for more than 360,000 admitted patients and handled over 5.3 million outpatient visits.
The report also notes financial challenges facing hospitals, citing a RAND Corporation study showing Arkansas has the nation’s lowest commercial insurance reimbursement rates. Hospital leaders say improving reimbursement is essential to recruiting healthcare professionals, maintaining specialized services, and expanding access to care throughout Arkansas.
The Arkansas Hospital Association represents 110 hospitals and healthcare organizations across the state.
