Squishy Toy Heat Warning: Parents Urged to Keep Fidget Toys Out of Hot Cars and Away From Microwaves

Parents are being warned about a growing safety hazard involving squishy and gel-filled fidget toys after reports of severe burns linked to overheating the popular toys.

Safety experts say leaving squishy toys inside hot vehicles, in direct sunlight, or heating them with hairdryers or microwaves can cause the toys to burst without warning. The thick gel or syrup inside can become extremely hot, sticking to skin and clothing and causing serious thermal burns.

Consumer Reports recently found that some toy fillings are highly acidic, creating an additional risk of chemical burns if the toy leaks or ruptures.

The danger has increased because of viral social media videos encouraging children to microwave squishy toys to make them softer. Medical reports have documented children suffering serious facial burns after overheated toys exploded.

Parents are encouraged to never allow children to microwave, freeze, or heat squishy toys, and to avoid leaving them inside vehicles where temperatures can quickly exceed 110 degrees. Toys showing signs of wear, leaks, or damage should be thrown away immediately.

If gel from a ruptured toy contacts the skin, experts recommend washing the area immediately with cool running water and gentle soap. Sticky residue can be removed using mineral oil or petroleum jelly. Anyone experiencing severe burns or skin irritation should seek emergency medical care or contact the Poison Help Line at 1-800-222-1222.
