As thousands of Arkansans head to lakes and rivers for Independence Day celebrations, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District is reminding everyone to make water safety a top priority.
Officials expect heavy boating and swimming traffic throughout the holiday weekend and are encouraging visitors to wear life jackets, operate boats responsibly and always stay alert while on the water.
The Corps urges boaters to maintain safe speeds, watch carefully for swimmers and never operate a boat after consuming alcohol. Swimmers are encouraged to never swim alone and to stay within designated swimming areas.
Officials also warn that several Arkansas lakes continue to experience elevated water levels. Floating logs, debris and submerged hazards may be present, while rising water can cover picnic tables, grills, parking areas and sections of shoreline.
Visitors are encouraged to check current lake conditions before leaving home and obey all posted warnings and temporary closures.
The Corps also reminds everyone to remain weather aware. Summer storms can develop quickly, bringing lightning, high winds and dangerous conditions. Checking forecasts before heading out, monitoring weather throughout the day and identifying shelter locations can help keep families safe.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers encourages everyone to enjoy Arkansas’ lakes and rivers responsibly and make safety the top priority throughout the Independence Day holiday.
