Dangerous heat will dominate the Arkansas weather forecast this week as the National Weather Service warns of increasingly hazardous conditions across much of the state. The greatest heat risk is expected Tuesday through Thursday as high pressure keeps temperatures soaring into the mid and upper 90s with little overnight relief.

Heat index values are forecast to range from 103 to 114 degrees. Searcy could see the highest apparent temperatures, reaching 114 degrees Friday, while Conway may climb to 113 degrees Thursday and Friday. Little Rock is expected to reach heat index values around 111 degrees, and Batesville could top out near 110 degrees later in the week.

Forecast highs include Batesville at 96 degrees, Clinton at 96, Conway at 98, Harrison at 93, Jasper at 92, Little Rock at 99, Marshall at 92, Mountain Home at 93, Russellville at 97, Salem at 95, and Searcy at 99 degrees.

Rain chances will remain limited through the first half of the week before isolated to scattered afternoon thunderstorms develop beginning Wednesday and continue into the Independence Day weekend. While a few storms could produce brief heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning, widespread washouts are not expected.

The National Weather Service is reminding everyone to practice heat safety wherever they are. Workers at job sites should stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade. Families should check on elderly neighbors, anyone who is sick, and those without air conditioning. Never leave children or pets unattended inside a vehicle and always “Look Before You Lock.” Anyone spending time outdoors should limit strenuous activities during the hottest part of the day, find shade whenever possible, and drink plenty of water.

Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly during prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures. Officials encourage all Arkansans to take the heat seriously throughout the week.
