Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks reminded the nation of the cost of freedom and sacrifice, a new effort is underway in Batesville to create a permanent place honoring those who served in the United States military.
The Independence County Veterans Memorial Board has launched a $500,000 fundraising campaign to build a veterans memorial at Riverside Park in Batesville.
The goal is to create a lasting gathering place where veterans, military families and future generations can remember and honor the men and women who answered the call to serve.
Memorial Planned For Riverside Park
The City of Batesville has approved Riverside Park as the location for the memorial.
Plans call for monuments representing the values associated with military service, along with displays featuring the U.S. Constitution and an open Bible.
Organizers describe the memorial as a tribute to faith, freedom and country, as well as a place where families can reflect on the sacrifices made by American veterans.
The project is being developed by the Independence County Veterans Memorial Board as a permanent community memorial honoring military service.
$500,000 Fundraising Campaign Underway
Organizers are seeking to raise $500,000 to complete the project.
One way individuals and families can support the memorial is by purchasing a personalized memorial brick.
Memorial bricks are available for $150.
The bricks provide an opportunity to recognize veterans, service members and military families while helping fund construction of the memorial.
A Place For Future Generations
Organizers hope the memorial will serve not only today’s veterans and their families, but generations of children who visit Riverside Park in the future.
The project is envisioned as a place where visitors can learn about service, sacrifice and the freedoms protected by generations of American military members.
The fundraising campaign comes during the year marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, an anniversary that has renewed reflection nationwide on service, sacrifice and remembrance.
