2 Arkansas high school seniors are making history at Arkansas State University-Beebe after becoming the first students to complete the college’s practical nursing program while still enrolled in high school.

Early College high school students, who were presented with their certification in practical nursing from Dr. Cindy Smith (middle), are Zi’Kiya Smith (left) and Kooper Neal.

Zi’Kiya Smith of Augusta High School and Kooper Neal of Riverview High School successfully completed the rigorous practical nursing pathway through ASU-Beebe’s Early College program while also finishing their high school coursework.

As a result, both students will graduate with both a high school diploma and a college credential, giving them a major head start in the healthcare field.

“These 2 young women have accomplished something truly extraordinary,” said Dr. Cindy Smith, director of nursing at ASU-Beebe. “Over the last 2 years, they showed up early, stayed late, pushed through challenges, and consistently demonstrated the professionalism we expect from future nurses.”

The students entered the practical nursing pathway as juniors in August 2024 and balanced demanding college-level nursing classes while continuing their high school activities and responsibilities.

School leaders from Augusta and Riverview praised the students for their dedication, perseverance, and leadership throughout the program.

ASU-Beebe Chancellor Dr. Jennifer Methvin said the accomplishment demonstrates the strength of partnerships between secondary schools and higher education institutions while opening doors for future healthcare professionals.

The milestone also highlights the continued growth of innovative educational pathways designed to prepare students for high-demand careers before graduating high school.

ASU-Beebe officials say the practical nursing and registered nursing programs continue providing students with hands-on training, classroom instruction, and workforce-ready healthcare skills.

Founded in 1927, ASU-Beebe serves students across Arkansas through campuses in Beebe, Heber Springs, Searcy, Little Rock Air Force Base, and online programs.
