New Arkansas Tire Law Takes Effect July 1, Could Increase Tire Disposal Fees

A new Arkansas law took effect on Wednesday, July 1, changing how tire disposal costs are handled and allowing tire dealers to charge additional fees for transporting and disposing of used tires.

The Tire Management and Recycling Act, also known as Senate Bill 606, updates state regulations that previously prevented tire dealers from charging customers separate disposal-related fees. While Arkansas’ long-standing $3 per tire rim removal fee remains in place, it will no longer cover transportation costs associated with hauling used tires.

As a result, tire retailers across Arkansas are expected to increase disposal charges to recover rising transportation and processing expenses.

Some tire dealers say processors are charging more to transport waste tires, leaving local businesses to absorb the added costs or pass them along to customers. Business owners in southeast Arkansas have reported that many tire shops are preparing to implement higher fees beginning this month.

The legislation also comes as some tire dealers continue to deal with large backlogs of used tires awaiting removal. Some business owners have expressed concern that the increased costs could lead to more illegal tire dumping if customers choose not to pay higher disposal fees.

Supporters of the law say it modernizes Arkansas’ tire recycling system by giving dealers greater flexibility to recover actual transportation expenses. However, some tire retailers say the changes will create additional financial burdens for both businesses and consumers.

Arkansans purchasing new tires are encouraged to ask their local tire dealer about any updated disposal or transportation fees before completing their purchase.
