A remarkable piece of Arkansas and American history now has a permanent home following a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Wednesday, July 1, at the William Carl Garner Visitor Center in Heber Springs.

Community leaders, local residents, and guests gathered to celebrate the permanent display of the historic podium used by President John F. Kennedy during the dedication of Greers Ferry Dam on October 3, 1963. The same podium was also used by President Bill Clinton during the dam’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The podium was donated by Jean Garner in honor of her late husband, William Carl Garner, whose more than 57-year career with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers helped shape Greers Ferry Lake into one of Arkansas’ premier recreation destinations. Garner played a key role in organizing President Kennedy’s historic visit and preserved the podium for future generations.
ArkansasRadio.com Radio Stations owner Bob Connell reflected on Garner’s legacy, recalling the honor of knowing him and photographing President Bill Clinton with Garner during the 50th anniversary celebration of Greers Ferry Dam.

The newly dedicated display serves as a lasting reminder of one of Arkansas’ most significant presidential visits and honors the lifelong contributions of William Carl Garner to tourism, recreation, and the preservation of local history.
