Lyon College is welcoming art lovers from across the state as the Kresge Gallery hosts the 39th annual Small Works on Paper exhibition, a statewide traveling showcase featuring artwork from 40 Arkansas artists.
The exhibition is currently on display through the end of May inside the Kresge Gallery located in the historic Alphin Humanities Building on the Lyon College campus in Batesville.
A public reception is scheduled for Thursday, May 7, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., with an artist talk beginning at 5:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served, and admission is free.
Organized and sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Council, the Small Works on Paper exhibition is a juried statewide visual arts showcase featuring two-dimensional artwork measuring no larger than 18 by 24 inches. The exhibit highlights artists who are members of the Arkansas Artist Registry and travels to 10 venues across Arkansas during its yearlong tour.
This year’s exhibition includes works from artists representing communities across Arkansas, including Batesville, Searcy, Cabot, Little Rock, Rogers, Fayetteville, Hot Springs, Jonesboro, Pine Bluff, North Little Rock, El Dorado, Maumelle, Prairie Grove, Sherwood, Bella Vista, Russellville, West Memphis, Paragould, and more.
Entries were juried by artist and Louisiana State University professor Kelli Scott Kelley, who reviewed more than 300 submissions to select the final exhibition pieces.
Two artists received purchase awards this year. Melissa “Mo” Lashbrook of Cabot and Lisa Thorpe of Little Rock were selected, and their artwork will become part of the Small Works on Paper permanent collection.
Now in its 39th year, Small Works on Paper remains the only state-run juried visual arts exhibition dedicated to showcasing Arkansas artists.
Kresge Gallery hours are Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The gallery is located at 2300 Highland Road in Batesville.
