A native of Pencil Bluff has earned journalism’s highest honor after winning a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting focused on the towing industry.

Ginny Monk, who earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas, works for CT Mirror, a nonprofit online news publication based in Hartford, Connecticut.

Monk helped lead reporting that earned national recognition for its in-depth coverage of problems within the towing industry.

Speaking after the announcement, Monk said she was overwhelmed by the honor.

“I’m really excited that we won. It’s surreal. It’s the kind of thing that you think about when you first get into journalism and think it’s probably never going to happen and here we go.”

The Pulitzer Prize is considered one of the most prestigious awards in journalism and recognizes excellence in reporting, writing, and public service.

Monk’s achievement is drawing praise across Arkansas as residents celebrate another national accomplishment connected to the Natural State.
