The Arkansas Department of Transportation is launching a powerful new series of work zone safety public service announcements featuring real employee experiences as part of its ongoing Slow Down, Phone Down campaign.

The new PSAs take a more direct and personal approach, highlighting real-life incidents involving road crews. One features ARDOT employee Terry Skaggs and his wife Sandra, sharing the impact of a serious work zone injury.

Another tells the story of employee Robert Phillips, who witnessed the death of a coworker.

A third includes insight from Arkansas Highway Police Sergeant Shufford Day on work zone laws.

According to ARDOT, Arkansas has seen improvements in work zone safety. In 2021, there were 2,594 crashes and 84 fatalities or serious injuries. By 2024, that dropped to 1,648 crashes and 54 fatalities or serious injuries—a 36 percent decrease.

ARDOT Director Jared D. Wiley says 2026 marks the final year of the campaign, with a focus on making a lasting impact through real stories and increased awareness.

Officials say the message remains clear: slow down, stay alert, and protect both workers and drivers on Arkansas roads.
