Dangerous heat will continue across Arkansas through the Labor Day weekend, with heat index values potentially exceeding 110° in some locations.
The National Weather Service says a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM Sunday for eastern Arkansas, most of central Arkansas, the Arkansas River Valley and much of west-central Arkansas.
Widespread heat index values between 105° and 110° are expected. Isolated locations could experience even higher readings during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Actual high temperatures across Arkansas are expected to range from the mid-90s to more than 100°. The combination of high temperatures and humidity will increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
A few isolated or widely scattered showers and thunderstorms could develop during the afternoon. Rain chances are generally around 20% in some areas, but any rainfall is not expected to provide widespread or lasting relief from the heat.
Labor Day will remain hot across much of Arkansas. Although the current Heat Advisory is scheduled to expire Sunday evening, very warm and dry conditions are expected to continue into next week.
People planning to attend outdoor Labor Day events should drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations. Lightweight and light-colored clothing is recommended.
Strenuous activities should be scheduled during the morning or evening whenever possible. Residents should also check on older adults, neighbors and others who may not have reliable air conditioning.
Children and pets should never be left unattended inside a parked vehicle, even for a short period.
Signs of heat exhaustion can include heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea and headache. Confusion, fainting or loss of consciousness could indicate heat stroke and require immediate emergency medical attention.
Residents should continue monitoring their local forecast because advisory areas, temperatures and expiration times could change.
