Law enforcement officials say Officer Long was known as a mentor, protector, and friend to countless students, faculty members, and families throughout the community. His compassion, commitment, and service touched many lives during his years in uniform.

The Newport Police Department is asking the public to keep Officer Long’s family, friends, coworkers, and the Newport Public Schools community in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

“Rest easy, Officer Long. Your watch has ended, but your impact on this community will live on forever,” the department shared in a statement.
