Students at Lyon College turned competition into community impact during the “Race the Dr. for Help and Hope” event at Bryan Lake.

Lyon College Assistant Professor of Political Science Dr. Brendan Connell, Professor of Mathematics Dr. Jeremy Chapman and members of the Lyon College Political Science Club and Alpha Chi Honor Society gather during Saturday’s “Race the Dr. for Help and Hope” at Bryan Lake on the Lyon College campus in Batesville.

Hosted by the Political Science Club and the Alpha Chi Honor Society, the event challenged participants to race Assistant Professor Dr. Brendan Connell, an accomplished endurance runner. For each milestone reached—and for runners who beat the professor—canned goods were pledged to the Help and Hope Food Pantry.

By the end of the event, more than 100 cans were collected to support local families facing food insecurity.

Organizers say the event combined friendly competition with a meaningful mission, drawing strong participation from students and faculty. A relay team of Brady Cook, Jada-Lynn King, and Christian Cox narrowly defeated Dr. Connell in a close finish that energized the crowd.

Student leaders say the initiative reflects Lyon College’s commitment to service and community engagement. With strong turnout and positive feedback, organizers hope to make the race an annual tradition supporting the Batesville community.
