crews from across Independence County responded to a significant fire Sunday night at the Independence Power Plant near Newark.

According to Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery, emergency crews were dispatched around 9:46 p.m. on Sunday, March 22, after reports of a fire in the plant’s coal yard.

Multiple departments quickly responded to the scene, including firefighters from Newark, Oil Trough, and Sulphur Rock, working together to contain the blaze.

Officials described the fire as “significant,” though no injuries have been reported at this time.

Crews remained on scene for several hours battling the fire before successfully bringing it under control. All responding units had cleared the area by approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, March 23.

The cause of the fire has not yet been released, and no additional details have been provided regarding potential damage.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as investigations move forward.
