Lyon College junior Catherine Mills of Clinton has been named a 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholar, one of the nation’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarships recognizing outstanding students pursuing careers in science, engineering and mathematics.
Mills, a double major in chemistry and biology with a minor in mathematics, earned the honor for her exceptional academic record, extensive research experience and commitment to becoming a physician-scientist. She maintains a perfect 4.0 GPA and has participated in research since her first year at Lyon College.
Her research focuses on developing rifamycin-core-based antibacterial compounds designed to fight multidrug-resistant pathogens under the direction of Dr. Irosha N. Nawarathne, professor of chemistry and director of undergraduate research. Mills has presented her work at scientific conferences and contributed to published research in the journal Molecules.
In addition to her work at Lyon College, Mills completed a summer research appointment at Arkansas Children’s Research Institute, contributing to clinical studies that resulted in a peer-reviewed publication and another manuscript currently under review.
Campus leaders praised Mills for her academic excellence, leadership and dedication to scientific discovery. She serves as an Honors Fellow, supplemental instruction leader, chemistry, biology and mathematics tutor, resident assistant, and president-elect of the Chemistry Club. She is also a former member of the Scots volleyball team.
Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation supports outstanding sophomores and juniors planning careers in research. During its 40th anniversary year in 2026, the foundation is awarding 454 new scholarships and supporting a record 513 Goldwater Scholars nationwide.
