The Old Independence Regional Museum will celebrate the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States with a special free public program on Sunday, June 28, at 2:00 p.m.

The event will feature Dr. Kieran O’Keefe, Assistant Professor of History at Lyon College, discussing his new book, Suffering for the Crown: The Hudson Valley Loyalists and the Violence of Revolution.
During the presentation, O’Keefe will examine the American Revolution as a civil war, exploring the experiences of Americans who remained loyal to the British Crown and those who supported the creation of a new nation. The program will also discuss the lasting psychological and social effects of the conflict and offer a deeper look at the human cost of the Revolution. Book sales and a signing will follow the presentation.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to revisit Batesville’s Bicentennial celebrations from 1976. Jim and Anne Bechdoldt will share memories from their participation in the historic Bicentennial Wagon Train, which traveled across the United States from the West Coast to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, 50 years ago.
The museum is also encouraging community support for its “250 for 2.50” fundraising campaign. Donors will be recognized on a special Honor Roll as the museum commemorates America’s 250th anniversary. Admission during Independence Day week will be just $2.50.
Guests are also invited to explore the museum’s newest exhibit, Echoes of Time, which highlights American symbols, Independence Day traditions, and communities throughout the region named for veterans of conflicts ranging from the Revolutionary War through World War II.
Founded in 1820 and named in honor of the Declaration of Independence, Independence County provides a unique connection to America’s history and its upcoming 250th anniversary celebration.
