Cabot Arkansas Announces Major SPUI Interchange Project at Exit 16
The City of Cabot and The Arkansas Department of Transportation have officially launched construction on a major traffic improvement project at Highway 5 and Interstate 57 Exit 16 designed to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow across the rapidly growing city.

City officials announced work on the project began May 11, with an official groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for Thursday. Leaders also expressed hope for additional future improvements at Exit 19 later this year.
The project will convert the current interchange into a SPUI, or single point urban interchange, a traffic design that allows all traffic movements through one central signal instead of multiple stop points and traffic lights.
Officials say the redesign will significantly improve efficiency during peak traffic periods, especially during afternoon rush hours when traffic regularly backs up in multiple directions around Cabot’s interstate exits.
Mayor Ken Kincade and transportation officials appeared in a newly released video from The Arkansas Department of Transportation explaining how the SPUI system works and why it was selected for Cabot.

Transportation officials say the new design will reduce conflict points, keep vehicles moving more efficiently, and better accommodate continued residential, commercial, and sports tourism growth in the area.
Cabot leaders noted the city’s trade area now exceeds 125,000 people, placing increasing pressure on existing road infrastructure.
Construction is expected to continue through April 2028. Officials warned drivers to expect periodic traffic changes, delays, and disruptions during the construction process but emphasized the long-term benefits will greatly improve traffic conditions for decades to come.
