Senator Tom Cotton Introduces Critical Infrastructure Airspace Defense Act against unauthorized drone activity

Tom Cotton has introduced new legislation aimed at strengthening protections for critical infrastructure sites against unauthorized drone activity.

The proposed Critical Infrastructure Airspace Defense Act would give federally trained personnel the authority to detect, monitor, and take down drones posing a threat to sensitive locations. The measure builds on bipartisan counter-drone provisions previously passed in the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act.

Senator Cotton says the legislation is necessary to protect essential systems. “Our hospitals, power plants, water treatment facilities, and other critical infrastructure sites can’t remain sitting ducks for potential drone attacks,” Cotton said.

The bill would also establish a grant program to help facilities purchase and operate approved counter-drone technology.

Critical infrastructure includes power plants, nuclear facilities, airports, pipelines, and dams—assets considered vital to national security, economic stability, and public safety.
