NEW MADRID SEISMIC ZONE

Many earthquakes in northeastern Arkansas and nearby portions of Missouri and Tennessee occur in or around the New Madrid Seismic Zone.

The seismic zone is one of the most recognized earthquake regions in the central United States.

It includes portions of northeastern Arkansas, southeastern Missouri, western Tennessee and western Kentucky.

The region is known for a series of powerful earthquakes in 1811 and 1812.

Although most earthquakes recorded in the region today are relatively small, emergency management officials continue encouraging residents to be prepared for stronger earthquakes.

The number of small earthquakes alone does not establish that a major earthquake is imminent.

ARKANSAS EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS DRILL OCTOBER 15

The continued earthquake activity comes just days before International ShakeOut Day, scheduled for Thursday, October 15, 2026.

At 10:15 AM, Arkansans are encouraged to join millions of people around the world in practicing earthquake safety.

The annual drill teaches 3 important steps:

DROP — Get down onto your hands and knees.

COVER — Protect your head and neck, preferably beneath a sturdy table or desk.

HOLD ON — Hold onto your shelter until the shaking stops.

Schools, businesses, government agencies, families and individuals are encouraged to participate.

The Arkansas Department of Public Safety announced that more than 29,000 Arkansans had already registered for the 2026 drill as of its October 1 announcement.

The agency also encourages residents to review emergency plans, secure heavy furniture and maintain emergency supplies.

While small earthquakes occur regularly in the region, the ShakeOut drill serves as a reminder that knowing what to do during an earthquake can help reduce injuries.
