Residents in the Batesville area have another way to stay informed during severe weather and emergency situations thanks to a new free alert service offered through TextMyGov.
City officials are encouraging residents to sign up for National Weather Service and emergency notifications by texting BatesvilleNWS to 91896.
The free service provides important warning notifications for the Batesville area and ZIP code 72501. Alerts include tornado warnings, severe thunderstorm warnings, flood warnings, flash flood warnings, ice storm warnings, AMBER Alerts, and other local emergency notifications.
Officials say the alerts are sent directly from the National Weather Service and other authorized emergency agencies.
To help reduce notification fatigue, the service is configured to send warnings only and will not send weather watches.
City leaders encourage residents to maintain multiple ways of receiving weather information and believe the new text alert system provides an additional tool to help keep families informed and safe during emergencies.
Officials also remind users that the alert tone will follow the notification sound settings already selected on their personal devices.
Residents can enroll by texting BatesvilleNWS to 91896.
