Longtime Stone County newspaper publisher James “Rusty” Fraser is being honored for his military service and continued contributions to the community.

Stone Bank has named Fraser its Veteran of the Month for August. The recognition was presented by representatives from the bank’s Mountain View and Boulder teams.

Fraser served in the Alabama Air National Guard’s 160th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron from 1965 through 1976. During his 11 years of military service, Fraser attained the rank of captain.

Following his military career, Fraser turned his attention to community journalism.

He purchased the Stone County Leader in 1985 and continues serving as the newspaper’s publisher more than 4 decades later.

Through his leadership, Fraser has helped document the people, events and history of Mountain View and communities throughout Stone County.

Stone Bank says the Veteran of the Month award recognizes Fraser’s military record and his continued commitment to the Stone County community.
