Congressman French Hill joined Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, veterans, state officials and the Britt family Thursday to honor one of Arkansas’ greatest military heroes with the unveiling of a permanent bronze bust of Captain Maurice “Footsie” Britt inside the Arkansas State Capitol.
Hill, who spearheaded the effort to recognize Britt’s legacy, opened the ceremony by reflecting on the extraordinary life of the Medal of Honor recipient, former NFL player and former Arkansas Lieutenant Governor. He praised Britt’s perseverance from his childhood in Carlisle and Lonoke through his heroic actions during World War II and decades of public service.
The ceremony celebrated Britt’s Medal of Honor heroism during fierce fighting in Italy in 1943, where he continued leading American troops despite suffering multiple wounds while helping defeat a German counterattack.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders thanked Congressman Hill for being the driving force behind making the memorial possible, calling Britt one of Arkansas’ greatest heroes and an inspiration for future generations.
Representative Joey Carr, sponsor of the legislation authorizing the memorial, said the tribute was long overdue and praised Congressman Hill for allowing him to help bring the project to life.
Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. Paul Lawrence reflected on Britt’s battlefield courage and lifelong service, while Arkansas Secretary of State Cole Jester accepted the bust on behalf of the State of Arkansas.
The permanent monument now stands inside the Arkansas State Capitol, ensuring future generations will remember Captain Maurice “Footsie” Britt’s remarkable legacy of courage, sacrifice and service to Arkansas and the nation.
