North Little Rock Fire Department responded to a “chemical fire” fueled by magnesium metal at a Little Rock recycling center. You can watch video footage of firefighters responding to the scene below.
“Chemical Fire” Breaks Out At Little Rock Recycling Center
Please note, a magnesium fire is classified as a “chemical fire” and specifically as a “Class D fire” because it involves a chemical reaction where magnesium combines with oxygen to produce magnesium oxide, heat, and light. These fires are unique because they involve combustible metals.
On December 26 at around 7:15 PM, C-Shift firefighters tackled a massive blaze at a scrap metal and recycling yard, fueled by magnesium and automotive parts.
Engine 2 was the first to arrive, facing intense flames and heavy smoke.
Multiple fire crews from across the city worked through the night, with A-Shift taking over early the next morning to finish the job.
Despite adverse weather conditions, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
