Buffalo National River staff in Arkansas are set to begin a public planning process for updating the river’s management plan, with a 30-day public comment period running through September 15. This initiative comes in response to feedback from local communities, landowners, and river users who have highlighted the need to address increasing and changing use of this popular recreation area. The planning process, which is part of a multiyear effort, marks the first of three opportunities for public input on the future management of the river.
During this phase, the National Park Service (NPS) is seeking to raise awareness about the planning process and gather valuable feedback to shape the development of the updated plan. Comments can be submitted online at NPS Planning Website or by mail to the Superintendent at 402 N. Walnut Street, Suite 136, Harrison, AR 72601. The input collected will help the NPS address evolving visitation patterns, commercial service demands, and resource management challenges, ultimately guiding future management decisions to enhance visitor experiences while preserving the river’s natural and cultural resources. The draft plan is expected in Winter 2024/2025, with further public engagement opportunities in Spring/Summer 2025.
