Today marks a special milestone in Arkansas history as the Natural State celebrates 190 years of statehood.

Arkansas officially became the 25th state admitted to the Union on June 15, 1836, after spending nearly 17 years as Arkansas Territory.
Before statehood, the region became part of the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. As settlers moved into the territory, communities grew and development accelerated throughout the region.
Key figures in Arkansas’ journey to statehood included Territorial Governor William S. Fulton and delegates Ambrose Hundley Sevier and Archibald Yell, who played important roles in securing admission to the Union.
When Arkansas entered the United States, its economy was largely based on agriculture, particularly cotton production. Over the next 190 years, Arkansas evolved into a diverse state known for its agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, tourism, education, and business industries.
Today, Arkansas is home to more than 3 million residents and is recognized for its natural beauty, outdoor recreation, rich history, and strong communities.
As Arkansans celebrate the state’s birthday, it serves as a reminder of the people, places, and events that helped shape Arkansas into the state it is today.
Happy 190th Birthday, Arkansas!
