Arkansas officials are warning residents about a sharp increase in fire-related deaths across the state during 2026.

According to the Arkansas State Fire Marshal’s Office, Arkansas has already recorded 28 fire fatalities this year, surpassing the 27 deaths reported by this same time in 2025.

Officials say the majority of deadly fires continue to involve homes without working smoke alarms.

Data released by the state shows only 14 percent of homes involved in fatal fires during 2025 had functioning smoke alarms. In 2026, officials say only 2 of the 26 fatal fire structures confirmed so far contained working smoke alarms.

State officials are encouraging Arkansans to take immediate steps to improve home fire safety by installing smoke alarms, testing alarms monthly, and replacing batteries when needed.

Officials say working smoke alarms can reduce the risk of dying in a residential fire by nearly half.

The Arkansas State Fire Marshal’s Office also recommends families create and practice home fire escape plans at least twice each year and ensure every room has at least 2 exit routes.

Residents seeking fire prevention assistance or free smoke alarm programs are encouraged to contact local fire departments or emergency management offices.

The Arkansas State Fire Marshal’s Office operates through The Arkansas Division of Emergency Management and works statewide to reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities through education, prevention, enforcement, and emergency response coordination.
