The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is teaming up with law enforcement across Arkansas for the Put the Phone Away or Pay campaign, running April 6 through April 13, 2026.

The statewide enforcement effort comes during National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, with officers increasing patrols and issuing citations to drivers caught texting or using their phones behind the wheel.

🚨 Deadly Impact of Distracted Driving

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

3,275 people were killed in 2023 in crashes involving distracted drivers
An estimated 324,819 people were injured
Officials warn actual numbers are likely higher due to reporting limitations

Texting while driving is illegal in 49 states, including Arkansas.

⚠️ Arkansas Officials Issue Warning

Arkansas Public Safety Secretary Colonel Mike Hagar says distracted driving continues to be a major cause of serious crashes.

“Distracted driving, mainly cell phone use, remains a major contributor to serious and fatal crashes,” Hagar said. “If you drive distracted, you will face the consequences.”

📱 How to Drive Distraction Free

Officials recommend:

Pull over safely before texting
Let a passenger handle messages
Avoid social media while driving
Use Do Not Disturb mode
Keep phones out of reach

Drivers across Little Rock Arkansas, Searcy Arkansas, Batesville Arkansas, and surrounding communities should expect heightened enforcement during the campaign.
