Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has directed the Arkansas National Guard to transition its winter weather mission from supporting the Arkansas State Police to supporting the Arkansas Department of Health in select counties across the state.

The change in operational focus will remain in effect at least through January 28, 2026, as state agencies continue coordinating winter weather preparedness and response efforts.
State officials say the transition allows the Guard to assist health operations where staffing, transportation, and logistical support may be needed during severe winter conditions. The Guard’s mission could include delivering supplies, assisting medical facilities, and supporting emergency response coordination in affected communities.
The Arkansas National Guard includes the 87th Troop Command, the 77th Combat Aviation Brigade, and the 39th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which routinely support emergency operations during natural disasters, winter storms, and other statewide emergencies.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed on winter weather conditions, follow local emergency guidance, and take necessary precautions to ensure personal safety during periods of extreme cold and hazardous travel.
