Emergency and environmental personnel remain on the scene of a chemical spill affecting Gin Creek near the bike trail between Hastings and Queensway.

According to a public notice, the spill is estimated to involve approximately 25 gallons of roof sealant. Officials said the product was being applied when unexpected rainfall washed some of it from the roof and into Gin Creek.

Responders have established containment measures in the creek, including a temporary dam designed to prevent the product from flowing farther downstream. The appropriate agencies have been notified, and crews are continuing containment, cleanup and assessment operations.

The bike trail is closed from Queensway to Hastings while crews remain on the scene. The public should avoid the closed section and allow emergency and environmental personnel to work safely.

Officials said a significant impact on Gin Creek is not expected. However, out of an abundance of caution, residents and visitors are being asked to avoid contact with the creek and creek water downstream from the spill, including areas within the public park, until further notice.

Residents and visitors should:

  • Avoid entering or wading in Gin Creek.
  • Keep children and pets away from the creek and creek banks.
  • Do not fish or swim in the affected portion of the creek.
  • Do not use water from the affected area.
  • Avoid touching or disturbing containment and cleanup equipment.

The restrictions will remain in effect until officials determine that the affected area is safe for normal public use.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
