Crystal River Cave in Cave City Restores Historic Sign While Preserving Arkansas History

, , Leave a comment

A weathered roadside sign that once welcomed travelers to one of Arkansas’ unique attractions is receiving new appreciation as restoration efforts continue at Crystal River Cave & Courts.

The historic sign proudly advertised “Electric Lights • Underground River • Temperature 55° • Drive In,” words that carried a special meaning for visitors during the early 1930s.

At a time when electric lighting inside caves was considered a remarkable attraction, the illuminated underground river offered families an unforgettable experience while traveling through Arkansas.

Rather than replacing the aging sign with something new, Crystal River Cave owners chose to preserve it, believing every crack, faded letter, and layer of peeling paint tells part of the attraction’s remarkable history.

Long before websites, GPS navigation, or social media, roadside signs like this one encouraged families to pull off the highway and experience one of Arkansas’ hidden natural wonders.

Owners say preserving history isn’t about making everything look brand new. Instead, it’s about protecting the authentic stories that connect today’s visitors with generations who came before them.

As restoration work continues throughout the property, Crystal River Cave officials are asking the public to help preserve Arkansas history by sharing their story with others. Every visit, recommendation, comment and social media share helps support ongoing restoration efforts.

Crystal River Cave remains one of Arkansas’ historic roadside destinations, and owners hope the community will continue supporting efforts to preserve the attraction for future generations.
