Sixth Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Will Jones has determined that 3 Arkansas State Park Rangers were legally justified in the fatal shooting of Matthew Garrett, 31, of Judsonia, following an officer-involved shooting on May 25, 2026.
According to authorities, Pulaski County Dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 6:15 p.m. reporting a possible medical emergency at a residence in the 22000 block of State Highway 300 in Roland.
When first responders arrived, they discovered a man suffering from a large head laceration. While providing medical assistance, emergency personnel observed another individual nearby holding a large machete. Concerned for their safety, first responders requested immediate law enforcement assistance and withdrew from the scene.
Due to the rural location and its proximity to Pinnacle Mountain State Park, 3 Arkansas State Park Rangers responded to the call.
Investigators say the rangers encountered Garrett, who advanced toward them while holding a weapon. The rangers discharged their firearms, striking Garrett. He died at the scene.
The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division conducted the investigation into the officer-involved shooting and submitted its findings to the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for review.
In a letter dated June 30, 2026, Prosecuting Attorney Will Jones concluded the use of deadly force by the 3 Arkansas State Park Rangers was justified under Arkansas law.
The investigation has now been closed following the prosecutor’s legal determination.
