City leaders, business officials and community members gathered Tuesday morning to celebrate the groundbreaking of the first phase of the LOCOMUT Trail, a major project designed to improve recreation, transportation and economic development in Cabot and throughout Lonoke County.

The first construction phase, funded through Metroplan, will extend along Lincoln Street from Highway 89 east toward Highway 38. The multi-use trail will eventually become part of the future 220-mile Central Arkansas Greenway System, connecting communities across the region.

Cabot Mayor Ken Kincade said the project represents far more than a walking and biking trail.
“This project is an example of quality of life,” Kincade said. “Our residents and visitors will have a place to walk, ride bicycles and exercise right here in Cabot. You won’t have to drive to Little Rock anymore to enjoy these activities.”
Kincade said the groundbreaking marks the beginning of a 4-phase project expected to be completed over the next 4 to 5 years.
“We’re excited that not only is it community development, it’s economic development,” Kincade said. “Along the trail there will be opportunities for bicycle shops, restrooms, water fountains and even small cafes. This is another game changer for Cabot that makes our community even stronger.”

Cabot Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Gina Jones said the trail has been years in the making.
“We are so excited to have something like this coming to our town,” Jones said. “I know it’s been in the making for about 5 years, and it’s wonderful to see it coming to fruition. We can promote exercise in our town now. We’ve got trails. I mean, come to Cabot. We’ve got it all.”
Future phases of the LOCOMUT Trail will connect downtown Cabot, downtown Austin, schools, neighborhoods, parks and other destinations, creating a safer and healthier transportation option while encouraging continued economic growth.
