Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has declared a state of emergency in advance of severe winter weather expected to impact Arkansas on or about January 23, 2026, citing potential dangers to public safety, infrastructure, and essential services statewide.

Under Executive Order 26-03, the governor directed $250,000 from the Governor’s Disaster Response and Recovery Fund to support emergency response and recovery efforts. The funding will be administered at the discretion of the Director of the Arkansas Division of Emergency Management.
The declaration allows emergency response vehicles and commercial carriers delivering essential supplies — including electricity, fuel, food, and medical equipment — to operate under temporary federal exemptions designed to speed disaster response and recovery. These vehicles will also be authorized to bypass The Arkansas Department of Transportation weigh stations through February 23, 2026, provided size and weight restrictions are still met and proper permits are not required.
The emergency order is intended to address anticipated impacts from severe winter storms, extreme low temperatures, and increased fuel demand, which could create supply challenges for propane, natural gas, and heating oil.
State officials say the declaration ensures resources and logistical flexibility are available to support local governments, utility crews, and emergency responders as hazardous conditions develop.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather forecasts closely, prepare emergency supplies, and limit travel when conditions become dangerous.
