An Arkansas school is receiving national recognition and a $1 million prize for its innovative approach to education, with plans to bring its model to even more communities across the Natural State.

The Learning Lounge in Pine Bluff has been named the winner of the prestigious 2026 Yass Prize, receiving the $1 million grand prize during an awards ceremony held October 6 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The award recognizes educational organizations developing new approaches to teaching and learning, particularly those creating opportunities for students and families who need alternatives to conventional classroom settings.
The Learning Lounge was founded by Arkansas educator Kanesha Adams after she struggled to find an appropriate educational environment for her adopted niece.
What began as one family’s search for the right school has developed into a growing private educational program serving 73 students, with more than 90 additional students on its waiting list, according to the Yass Prize announcement.
ARKANSAS SCHOOL BUILT AROUND “LARGER THAN LABELS”
The Learning Lounge operates with a philosophy that children are “Larger Than Labels,” recognizing that students have different abilities, backgrounds, experiences and educational needs.
Its educational model combines academic instruction with entrepreneurship, arts, outdoor learning, community-centered education and therapeutic support when needed.
The school emphasizes individualized learning opportunities that help students develop their strengths rather than being defined by their challenges.
According to the Yass Prize organization, the Pine Bluff program represents an approach that can help strengthen families and provide new opportunities for communities experiencing limited educational options.
The Learning Lounge is now preparing to expand its educational model into additional Arkansas communities.
FOUNDER KANESHA ADAMS RECOGNIZED NATIONALLY

Founder Kanesha Adams has built her work around the importance of providing children with supportive, personalized learning environments.
Her experience seeking the right educational setting for her niece inspired the creation of a school designed to meet different learning needs.
The program has attracted growing interest from families seeking educational alternatives, with the Yass Prize announcement reporting more than 90 students awaiting admission.
The $1 million national award provides significant financial resources to support the school’s mission and planned expansion.
MORE THAN $6 MILLION AWARDED TO EDUCATION INNOVATORS
The Arkansas winner was among educational organizations nationwide recognized during the 2026 Yass Prize awards.
More than $6 million was awarded to this year’s recipients.
In addition to The Learning Lounge’s $1 million grand prize, 8 finalists received $500,000 each.
Another 17 semifinalists received awards ranging from $50,000 to $150,000.
Janine and Jeff Yass also announced more than $17 million in additional funding for previous Yass Prize recipients expanding their educational programs.
The awards recognize organizations that demonstrate the program’s 4 STOP principles:
S — Sustainable
T — Transformational
O — Outstanding
P — Permissionless
The principles focus on developing educational models that can grow, introduce meaningful changes, demonstrate strong results and overcome barriers to new learning opportunities.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR AN ARKANSAS SCHOOL
The Yass Prize, launched in 2021 and supported by the Center for Education Reform, recognizes organizations exploring different approaches to education.
According to the organization, its awards initiative has provided more than $84 million to over 285 organizations serving more than 14 million students and families nationwide.
Yass Prize creator Janine Yass praised the dedication of educational leaders working to create additional opportunities for children.
She said the organization’s efforts focus not only on recognizing innovative schools but also on providing financial resources, connections and support to help successful programs expand.
ARKANSAS EDUCATION MODEL PREPARING TO EXPAND
For The Learning Lounge, the $1 million grand prize represents a major opportunity to continue developing an educational model that began in Pine Bluff.
With 73 students currently enrolled and more than 90 on a waiting list at the time of the announcement, the school’s leadership is preparing to take its approach to additional communities across Arkansas.
The national recognition also places an Arkansas-founded educational organization at the center of a nationwide discussion about personalized learning, school choice, rural education and innovative classroom models.
