Students in Mrs. Adams’ class at Mountain View Elementary School turned a favorite summertime fruit into a full day of hands-on learning during a special Watermelon Day celebration Friday.
The classroom activities combined math, reading, shapes and plenty of fun as students explored different lessons centered around watermelon.
Students counted watermelon seeds and used them to solve addition equations, giving them a hands-on way to practice important math skills.
The class also enjoyed books featuring watermelon and participated in a watermelon shape hunt, combining reading and observation with the day’s theme.
After completing the educational activities, students were treated to fresh watermelon to finish the celebration.
School officials described the day as “one in a melon” and thanked Mrs. Adams and the staff at Mountain View School District for creating classrooms where students can learn while feeling comfortable and at home.
The special day is an example of how teachers can turn everyday objects and foods into memorable learning experiences that reinforce classroom skills.
For Mrs. Adams’ students, Watermelon Day provided lessons in math, reading and shapes — along with a sweet reward at the end.
