Academy Award-winning actor Matthew McConaughey received two special Arkansas honors Friday during the Arkansas Cinema Society’s Filmland 2026 event in Little Rock.
Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders presented McConaughey with the honorary Arkansas Traveler award during an appearance at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. Sanders also issued a state proclamation designating Aug. 14, 2026, as Matthew McConaughey Day in Arkansas.
“Great to join hometown director Jeff Nichols and welcome Matthew McConaughey to the Natural State,” Sanders said while announcing the presentation.
The Arkansas Traveler certificate recognizes visitors who have contributed to the progress, enjoyment or well-being of Arkansas and its people. Recipients are recognized as goodwill ambassadors for the state. The certificate carries the signatures of the governor and Arkansas secretary of state. McConaughey appeared alongside Little Rock native Jeff Nichols, chairman and co-founder of the Arkansas Cinema Society, for an onstage conversation about the actor’s career and their work together.
Nichols wrote and directed the 2012 drama Mud, which starred McConaughey as a mysterious fugitive living on an island in the Mississippi River. The movie was filmed throughout Southeast Arkansas, including locations near DeWitt, Dumas, Lake Village, Crockett’s Bluff and Stuttgart. More than 400 Arkansas residents reportedly participated as extras.
Friday’s Filmland schedule also included a screening of McConaughey’s new film, The Rivals of Amziah King, followed by a question-and-answer session featuring McConaughey and Nichols. The film was written and directed by Andrew Patterson.
McConaughey was also honored with Variety’s Legend & Groundbreaker Award, recognizing his accomplishments and influence throughout his film career. The Arkansas Cinema Society said the award recognizes artists who have broken barriers in the entertainment industry and demonstrated lasting influence.
McConaughey won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. His other major credits include Interstellar, A Time to Kill, The Lincoln Lawyer, True Detective and Mud.
The presentation was part of Filmland 2026, the Arkansas Cinema Society’s annual celebration of filmmakers, actors and the art of filmmaking. Events are being held at the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts in Little Rock through Sunday, Aug. 16. View the Filmland schedule here.
