A 48-year-old Batesville man faces felony and misdemeanor charges following an alleged police pursuit that reportedly reached approximately 70 miles per hour and ended at the White River Medical Center Emergency Room.
Christopher R. Day was arrested Friday, July 31, following the pursuit through north-central Arkansas.
According to arrest information, the Batesville Police Department attempted to use a tire-deflation device during the pursuit, but the effort was unsuccessful.
The pursuit continued to the hospital emergency room, where a Batesville Police Department corporal reportedly positioned a patrol vehicle to block an exit and prevent Day’s vehicle from leaving.
Authorities said Day claimed he drove to the hospital because he was experiencing problems involving his pacemaker. Medical personnel reportedly evaluated Day but found no apparent medical issue.
Day was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Independence County Jail. His bond on the criminal case was set at $20,000.
Independence County Jail booking information lists charges of fleeing by vehicle or conveyance, speeding 1 to 15 miles per hour over the limit and reckless driving.
Fleeing by vehicle or conveyance is listed as a Class D felony. The speeding and reckless-driving charges are misdemeanors.
The jail record also lists a hold for CID and a probation and parole hold. The holds are listed separately from the new criminal charges and could affect Day’s eligibility for release even if bond is posted.
Court information further alleges that Day has 4 or more previous felony convictions and is being charged as a habitual offender. A habitual-offender enhancement could increase the potential sentence if he is convicted.
Day is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
Jail booking information may include underlying charges from a warrant even when an arrest was made on the warrant itself.
Charges are allegations. Day is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
