The Arkansas State Police has confirmed a suspect involved in a pursuit in Sherwood on April 22, 2026, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to authorities, the Sherwood Police Department requested assistance around 6:40 p.m. during a pursuit on Interstate 40. An Arkansas State Police trooper joined the chase after locating the suspect, who was driving a 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee.
When the suspect failed to stop, a tactical vehicle intervention was used. The vehicle exited the interstate and came to rest near the I-40 eastbound on-ramp at Prothro Junction.
The suspect, identified as Marquez Smart, 26, was found with a gunshot wound to the head while holding a pistol. Officials say no officers discharged their weapons.
The body was transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory, where the Medical Examiner determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and ruled the manner of death a suicide.
The Criminal Investigation Division of Arkansas State Police continues to investigate.
