Recycling Facility Fire on West Bethany Road
North Little Rock Fire crews responded this afternoon to the 4500 block of West Bethany Road after a fire broke out in a pile of processed automotive and other recycled materials. The incident was reported by the facility staff.
Such piles can naturally generate and retain heat, allowing it to build until the materials smolder or ignite without an external ignition source. In some cases, material deep within a pile may smolder for days before outward signs appear.
Crews worked with facility personnel to access and separate the material while establishing a relay pumping operation to supply the large volume of water needed.
Firefighters used Tuck 1’s aerial device and the deck gun from Engine 2 to bring the fire under control, and the blaze was extinguished in about an hour with no injuries reported.
