A wave of campaign‑sign thefts and vandalism has left residents across Izard County unsettled.
The Izard County Sheriff’s Office reports receiving multiple reports of campaign signs being taken or damaged, warning that such conduct may constitute theft, criminal mischief or trespass under Arkansas law.
Campaign Sign Thefts and Vandalism Reported
The sheriff’s office says it has received reports of campaign signs being taken or damaged on private property. Removing a sign without the owner’s permission may be charged as theft of property under A.C.A. § 5‑36‑103, a Class A misdemeanor if the value is $1,000 or less. It is not yet known how many incidents have been documented.
Damage or destruction of a sign may be prosecuted as criminal mischief in the first degree under A.C.A. § 5‑38‑203, also a Class A misdemeanor for damages of $1,000 or less. The office cautions that such actions interfere with the political process. No arrests have been announced at this time.
Entering or remaining on another’s property without permission could be charged as criminal trespass under A.C.A. § 5‑39‑203, a Class B misdemeanor. The department encourages property owners to report any suspicious activity. Specific locations of the alleged offenses have not been disclosed.
Officials ask the public to respect private property and allow elections to proceed without interference. Anyone who witnesses removal or damage of campaign signs is urged to contact the Izard County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation remains ongoing and further details are pending.
