America marked its 250th birthday by making history and setting a new world record over the nation’s capital.
Guinness World Records has officially recognized the July 4, 2026, display in Washington, D.C., as the largest fireworks display ever produced.
The record-setting celebration featured 840,537 individual fireworks launched during a 40-minute show over the National Mall and Potomac River.
The record was achieved by Freedom 250 LLC and Pyrotecnico Inc. during an event organized by Event Strategies Inc., according to the official Guinness World Records listing.
The display served as the patriotic finale to the United States’ semiquincentennial, the formal term for the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Pyrotecnico said its crews installed approximately 850,000 pyrotechnics for the celebration, with 840,537 successfully firing and counting toward the certified world record.
The production included 10 launch locations. Two land-based sites were positioned at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool and West Potomac Park, while 8 barges were placed along the Potomac River.
The company reported that the fireworks had a combined gross weight of approximately 168,107 pounds.
More than 50 trucks were required to transport the equipment, and more than 75 crew members participated in the production.
Designing the display required approximately 6 months, while installation and final preparations took about 3 weeks.
Crews worked through extreme summer heat and last-minute weather delays to complete the historic production.
The event exceeded a record that had stood for more than a decade.
The previous record was established by Iglesia Ni Cristo, or Church of Christ, during a New Year’s celebration in the Philippines on January 1, 2016.
That display featured 810,904 individual fireworks and continued for more than 1 hour. It surpassed an earlier record of 540,382 fireworks established in Norway in 2014, according to Guinness World Records.
The Washington display exceeded the former record by 29,633 fireworks.
Pyrotecnico partnered with Freedom 250 to design and produce the display as the centerpiece of the nation’s 250th-birthday celebration.
Rocco Vitale, president of Pyrotecnico, said it was an honor to help mark the national milestone. He said the company wanted families to leave believing they had witnessed the best fireworks display of their lives and carry the patriotic memory for generations.
The production included pyrotechnicians and supporting partners from across the United States and other countries. Crews from Mexico and Japan were among those recognized for contributing to the show.
Federal and local agencies involved in supporting the event included the National Park Service, U.S. Park Police, U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Pyrotecnico also recognized the White House Task Force 250, the Department of Transportation, the State Department, the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department and numerous private partners.
The record was officially credited to Freedom 250 LLC, Pyrotecnico Inc. and Event Strategies Inc.
The display became a once-in-a-generation conclusion to Independence Day, giving the United States a new world record as Americans celebrated 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
