A second earthquake in less than one week has been recorded near Mount Pleasant and Melbourne in Izard County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The latest earthquake measured 1.7 magnitude and occurred at approximately 10:36 a.m. Central Daylight Time on Sunday, July 26, 2026.
The epicenter was located approximately 3 kilometers—or nearly 2 miles—northwest of Mount Pleasant and about 14 kilometers—or nearly 9 miles—from Melbourne.
The earthquake was classified as an “md,” or duration magnitude, event. The USGS reports the earthquake has been reviewed and confirmed by a seismologist.
No members of the public had submitted reports indicating they felt Sunday’s earthquake through the USGS “Did You Feel It?” reporting system.
There were also no immediate reports of injuries or property damage associated with the small earthquake.
SECOND EARTHQUAKE IN ONE WEEK
Sunday’s earthquake follows a stronger tremor recorded in the same area six days earlier.
A 2.6 magnitude earthquake occurred at approximately 3:40 a.m. Monday, July 20, with an epicenter about 2 kilometers west of Mount Pleasant and approximately 15 kilometers from Melbourne.
Eight people submitted reports to the USGS indicating they felt the July 20 earthquake. No injuries or significant property damage were reported.
The two earthquakes were centered only a few miles apart, making Sunday’s event the second earthquake recorded near Mount Pleasant in less than one week.
Small earthquakes are routinely detected by sensitive seismic monitoring equipment and may not be strong enough to be noticed by people at the surface.
The USGS continues to monitor and document seismic activity across Arkansas and throughout the United States.
