Fort Smith’s long‑awaited sewer overhaul is gathering speed, reflecting the city’s commitment to modernizing essential infrastructure. Residents and officials alike are watching the progress with optimism.
The Consent Decree‑related sewer upgrade, led by Krapff‑Reynolds Construction and designed by Halff Associates, has reached a major milestone with 11,200 feet of pipe bursting completed, keeping the multi‑year project on schedule and under budget.
Pipe Bursting Milestone Reached
The Consent Decree-related sewer project began in January under the City of Fort Smith, Arkansas. It involves rehabilitating or replacing roughly 160 sanitary sewer manholes and nearly 18,000 linear feet of 8‑inch and 12‑inch pipe using open‑cut, pipe bursting, and cured‑in‑place lining. Design engineering is being handled by Halff Associates, Inc., while Krapff‑Reynolds Construction Co. serves as the contractor.
The September progress report shows 11,200 linear feet of sewer mains completed by pipe bursting, exceeding the target at 112 %. Open‑cut work has finished 995 linear feet, representing 26 % of its goal. These figures illustrate a rapid advance on the mainline component of the project.
Service line work has reached 4,050 linear feet, or 76 % of the planned length. Additionally, 205 sewer service cleanouts (71 %) and 65 manholes (64 %) have been completed or rehabilitated. The project cost to date is $5,828,059.45 of the estimated $9,096,780.50 budget.
The project remains on track for its projected completion on February 5, 2027. Stakeholders can view the project map online via the provided link. Further updates will be posted as the work progresses.
