Community leaders expressed alarm today as news broke of serious misconduct allegations involving a former law‑enforcement officer.
Former Chief Deputy Mikel Blocker was terminated by the Jasper Police Department after an independent investigation was requested, and on September 11, 2026, Arkansas State Police arrested him on theft‑of‑firearms charges. The investigation also led to the arrest and termination of Newton County Investigator Aaron Carter, with multiple firearms recovered. Sheriff Glenn Wheeler of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the department’s commitment to accountability and directed further inquiries to the Arkansas State Police.
Former Deputy Arrested for Firearms Theft
On September 11, 2026, Arkansas State Police agents arrested former Chief Deputy Mikel Blocker. The arrest came on charges of theft of firearms. Blocker had previously served as a Jasper Patrolman.
The arrest followed Blocker’s termination from the Jasper Police Department after Sheriff Glenn Wheeler requested an independent investigation. The termination was completed before the state police made the arrest. The Jasper Police Department took no direct part in the investigation beyond cooperation.
During the same investigation, Newton County Investigator Aaron Carter was also arrested on theft‑of‑firearm charges. Multiple firearms were recovered as part of the operation. Carter was terminated from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.
