Newport school officials are building upon last year’s student nutrition programs to help ensure no Greyhound has to learn or participate in school activities on an empty stomach.

Students will have access to free breakfast and lunch, while additional programs will provide fresh fruit and vegetable snacks, after-school snacks and dinner for students participating in qualifying activities and athletics.
“Fueling Our Pack. Feeding Their Future” is the message behind the district’s effort to provide students with nutritious food throughout the school day and during after-school programs.
FREE BREAKFAST
Free breakfast is available to every child enrolled in the district.
Breakfast options include a hot entrée, yogurt or muffins and a wide variety of cereals. Students can select the food that best fits their preferences.
FREE LUNCH
Elementary students will have 4 lunch options, including 2 hot entrées, a chef salad and a lunchable-style meal.
High school students will have more than 20 choices, including selections from 2 made-to-order food bars.
FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE PROGRAM
Elementary students will also benefit from the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, commonly known as FFVP.
A state grant allows the district to provide fresh produce snacks at no cost. The program introduces students to a variety of fruits and vegetables while encouraging healthy eating habits.
FREE AFTER-SCHOOL SNACKS
Students enrolled in enrichment courses can receive a free snack each day.
Available snacks may include Cheez-Its, yogurt, pretzels, chips, Chex Mix and other selections.
FREE DINNER
Students remaining at school for sports, tutoring, enrichment courses and other after-school activities can receive a free dinner similar to the district’s lunch offerings.
Visiting athletic teams can also pre-order meals to participate in the dinner program.
District officials say the programs reflect Newport’s commitment to supporting the whole student by ensuring children have access to food before, during and after the traditional school day.
The initiative carries the message: “Good Food. Great Options. Stronger Together.”
