BATESVILLE, Ark. — As rumors swirl, Arkansas State Police is getting involved. They’re trying to set the record straight amid the sad news.
The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is leading an investigation at the request of the Batesville Police Department into an incident involving an off-duty officer on Sunday night. According to the Arkansas State Police, the event occurred around 9:45 p.m. on July 19, 2026.
Arkansas State Police released the following statement:
“ASP will field all media inquiries. No additional information will be released at this time.”
Arkansas State Police officials said BPD officers were at a home on Buckeye Street when off-duty BPD officer Miguel Romero, 32, fled the scene in his personal vehicle. Officers then pursued Romero for approximately five miles through the Batesville-Moorefield area.
The Arkansas State Police reported that the pursuit ended when officers performed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention to stop Romero’s vehicle. Romero was taken into custody following the maneuver.
According to the Arkansas State Police, Romero was initially transported to the Independence County Detention Center. He was later transferred to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
The Arkansas State Police stated that Romero faces charges including felony Fleeing, Aggravated Assault, Driving While Intoxicated, and Reckless Driving. These charges stem directly from the incident under investigation.
Arkansas State Police confirmed that Romero has been placed on administrative leave by the Batesville Police Department. BPD is also conducting its own independent internal affairs investigation.The Arkansas State Police will handle all media inquiries regarding the case. No additional information will be released at this time.
