A small earthquake was recorded early Monday morning near Southside in Independence County according to the United States Geological Survey.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the magnitude 2.4 earthquake occurred at approximately 2:04 a.m. CDT on Monday, May 11, 2026.

Officials said the quake was centered about 3 miles southwest of Southside and approximately 29 miles north of Searcy at a depth of 7.5 miles, or 12.7 kilometers.

Data released by the U.S. Geological Survey and the New Madrid Seismic Network showed the earthquake was reviewed and confirmed with a magnitude rating of 2.4.

As of 7 a.m. Monday morning, no residents had submitted reports indicating they felt the earthquake.

Minor earthquakes of this size are typically not felt by residents and usually do not cause damage.

The earthquake occurred within the region monitored closely by the New Madrid Seismic Network, which tracks seismic activity across Arkansas and surrounding states.
