The Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division is investigating an officer involved fatal shooting in Independence County.

Authorities say the investigation was requested by the Arkansas Department of Corrections following an incident involving a DOC K-9 team on March 24, 2026.
The case began on March 23 at approximately 3:15 a.m. when Independence County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting on Brown Lane in the Bethesda community. Deputies found 2 individuals shot. One victim died at the scene, while the other was transported to a local hospital.
Officials identified the suspect as Christopher Lee Johnston, 48, of Jonesboro Arkansas, who fled the scene.
A multi-agency search involving the Independence County Sheriff’s Office, Batesville Police Department, DOC K-9 team, and Arkansas State Police followed.
On March 24, authorities located Johnston in a wooded area near the original scene. During the encounter with the DOC K-9 team in an adjoining field, deadly force was used. Johnston was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Authorities say the body will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory to determine the exact cause and manner of death.
No officers were injured.
At the conclusion of the investigation, findings will be submitted to the Independence County Prosecuting Attorney, who will determine whether the use of force complied with Arkansas law.
