Arrests After Brightspeed Cable Theft Investigation
Officers from the Jacksonville Police Department responded at about 6:49 a.m. on October 8 to a report of a cable theft near 3008 South First Street. They discovered cut telecommunications cable and a damaged utility pole at the scene. Drag marks in the area guided them into a nearby wooded location.
In the woods, officers found a makeshift campsite and detained five individuals. Recovered items included burned wire, exposed wire and discarded cable casing. A warm, smoky burn pit was also identified at the site.
Police also recovered a pair of wire cutters and a reciprocating saw near the burn pit. A Brightspeed representative confirmed the materials as company property and estimated the damage at roughly $35,000. The property owner stated the occupants had no permission to use the site.
Michael Shrubs, Jerry Rogers and Christina Parnell were arrested and charged with theft of scrap metal, criminal mischief, tampering with evidence and several other offenses; Shrubs faced an additional charge for possession of a Schedule I or II substance. They were transported to the Pulaski County Jail after processing. Kevin Johnson and Bryan George received citations for criminal trespass and possession of drug paraphernalia and were released.
